Painful periods or dysmenorrhoea is a condition where discomfort or pain is associated with menstruation. Though before or during the periods slight uneasiness is considered to be normal for many women and adolescent girls, the pain and distress, at times become so severe that it makesdifficult for them to carry out their normal daily routine. Symptoms for painful periods or dysmenorrhoea may start showing up a few days before or just at the beginning of the periods and gradually disappear as the menstrual flow diminishes or stops.
Painful periods or dysmenorrhoea is classified into the following two types:
- PRIMARY DYSMENORRHOEA:
This condition of painful periods usually occurs in young women and is not related to any specific problem of the uterus or other pelvic organs.
- SECONDARY DYSMENORRHOEA:
The secondary dysmenorrhoea (painful periods) generally occurs at a latter stage and is associated with a number of conditions such as endometriosis, pelvic infections, fibroids, intrauterine devices, ovarian cysts, stress, anxiety and sexually transmitted diseases.

- Headache, nausea, dizziness, fatigue and symptoms of general run down and flu like conditions.
- Cramps in the lower abdomen and pain in thighs and back.
- Anxiety, irritability and stress due to the uncomfortable prevailing state.

Having a warm bath or applying a heating pad to the lower abdomen helps reduce pain and spasm.
